October is Emotional Wellness Month. Often when we think about what it means to be healthy, we immediately go to our physical bodies and conjure images of healthy diets and plenty of exercise. While physical health is an important component to our well-being, emotional health plays a pretty big role too.

So what is emotional wellness? Being emotionally healthy doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re happy all the time, but instead that you accept your feelings for what they are. You can acknowledge emotions, thoughts, and feelings without altering or changing them and instead decide how to respond to them.

Negative emotions are a part of life and offer us valuable learning experience. Part of emotional wellness is embracing those feelings, learning from them, and moving forward with your life. Don’t let bumps in the road completely throw you off track. They’re there for a reason.

What makes emotional wellness so important? For starters, emotional health is a major part of your outlook on life. If you are emotionally well, you can view life more optimistically, meet challenges and recognize that something that challenges you is a good thing, and learn that setbacks aren’t the end of the world.

Remember that being healthy doesn’t just mean eating your fruits and veggies; there’s lot of different pieces that are all just as important when it comes to overall health.

September is Self-Care Awareness Month

What does self-care mean to you? While it can be expressed in a variety of ways, self-care is typically defined as simply being kind to yourself. We often feel guilty or even selfish about taking time for ourselves, but in reality if you aren't kind to yourself and supportive of your own needs, it will be almost impossible to be supportive of others.

Here are some ways you can incorporate self-care into your daily routine:

  • Get some sleep - We all know that groggy feeling that leaves us in a fog for the whole day if we don't get enough sleep. Sometimes it makes us moody or grumpy but consistently missing precious hours of sleep can lead to bigger, more serious health concerns down the road.
  • Do something that makes you feel good - Want to take a walk? Sit and read a book for an hour? Eat some dark chocolate? Do it. Do something that is just for you and leaves you feeling happy. Maybe you want to be alone in the quiet or surrounded by a group of friends. What's important is that you're left feeling better.
  • Stand up for yourself - This one may be a bit difficult for some of us, but it is so incredibly important that we know our self-worth. Don't let people walk all over you or push you into doing something you don't want to. Stand up for you, your needs, and what is best for your own mental well-being. Say no when you need to and don't feel guilty about it.
  • Exercise - Taking care of yourself physically can lead to all sorts of health benefits including emotional and psychological benefits as well. Any amount of exercise is better than none, so take the stairs more often, stretch during your lunch break, or take the dog for an extra long walk tonight.
  • Manage your stress - Find something that works for you to help dealing with stress. Meditation, yoga, keeping a journal, seeing a therapist, or maybe even a boxing class. Finding a healthy way to deal with the inevitable stresses of life can let you take control back of your life.

Letting stuff accumulate around your desk or at home can unconsciously draw our mind's attention away from what we're doing and instead focus on the mess. Letting go of the things you don't need can free up more space for the things that matter, both mentally and physically.

  2. Make some time for yourself - Allow yourself to have the time to do something that is just for you, nobody else. Maybe what you need to do is take a walk alone in the woods with just the sounds of nature. Maybe you want to try taking a guided meditation class that focuses on breath work. Whatever it is, give yourself the gift of time to focus on your own mental and physical well being.  
  3. Write it down - Trying to focus on 10 different ideas that are flying through your head is nearly impossible. Instead, try writing down your concerns, things you needs to do, goals, etc. Get them down on paper and off your mind. Now you won't have to worry about remembering 10 different tasks ahead of you this week and you can instead focus on accomplishing them one by one.
  4. Let go - If it doesn't serve you, let it go. Letting go seems like such a simple step but if can often be one of the most difficult. We form emotional attachments to different thoughts and ideas but learning to let them go if they aren't serving us or if they're the source of negative feelings can help free your mind for more positive thoughts and dreams.
