what is Kanna?
Kanna (Sceletium tortuosum) is a small, ground cover plant that is native to South Africa. It has been used for hundreds of years with the earliest recorded use dating back to the 1660s when Dutch settlers arrived. Warriors returning from battle would use Kanna to relieve stress and to increase mental clarity. Early settlers and tribesmen chewed Kanna to use it as a mood enhancer and appetite suppressant, but it can be consumed in a variety of ways including as a tea, tincture, or capsule.
How Does Kanna work?
Research has shown that Kanna contains several different alkaloids that contribute to the feelings of well-being when it’s consumed. The alkaloids found in Kanna work by interacting with the brain’s dopamine and serotonin receptors, allowing the brain to function on reduced levels of serotonin. Some research also suggests that the alkaloids may react with other receptors in the brain which could also be responsible for some of the additional therapeutic effects of Kanna.
